PDF Go-Back Key

Guide

Set up a go-back keyboard shortcut in PDF readers — navigation guide

All PDF Reading
Why You Need a Go-Back Key

When you click an in-text citation and jump to the References section, most PDF readers don't automatically return you to your reading position. A “Go Back” shortcut lets you jump back in one keystroke.

Adobe Acrobat / Reader
WindowsmacOS

Default shortcut

Alt+ (Windows) or +[ (macOS) — Previous View

Custom shortcut

  1. Go to Edit → Keyboard Shortcuts (Windows) or Acrobat → Preferences → General.
  2. Search for “Previous View”.
  3. Assign your preferred key combination.
Zotero 6 / 7 PDF Reader
All platforms

Default shortcut

Alt+ (Windows/Linux) or +[ (macOS)

The Zotero reader tracks your navigation history within a PDF. Use the shortcut immediately after clicking a reference to return to your reading position.

PDF.js (Firefox / Chrome built-in)
Browser

Browser PDF viewers do not natively support a “go back” feature. Use the browser's Alt+ back button — this navigates browser history, not PDF page history.

Recommended workaround

Open the PDF in a dedicated reader (Zotero, Acrobat, or Skim on macOS) for proper in-document navigation history.

Skim (macOS only)
macOS

Default shortcut

+[ — Go Back

Skim tracks in-document navigation history automatically and is free.
